We aren’t entitled to a good, happy life
History is almost entirely made up of periods of chaos and struggle. We grew up in an anomalous lull.
Everyone seems obsessed with the idea that times are getting worse. We even like to joke about (some aren’t joking) our timeline getting shifted and this new timeline being a far more awful version.
But I think that we probably just grew up and have lived our entire lives in an extraordinarily peaceful and easy period of time. The natural order of existence is kind of shitty and destructive and hard to deal with.
Constant war, fear, famine, disease, radical social shifts, deplorable conditions, scarcity, violent weather and environment, etc. That is what most of human existence has faced. This period since WWII has been an absolute cake walk compared to much of human history. At least for those of us lucky enough to live in modernized countries.
Perhaps this steady sense of apathy, dread and feeling like society is crumbling is actually the normal we should have been experiencing all along. Devour to survive, right?
That doesn’t mean we have to accept it or not fight for peace and harmony! However, we have to move past this “woe is me” attitude about how life isn’t as good as it used to be. Let’s fight to make it like it used to be for ourselves and, more importantly, for the children who will inherit this world.
