Seachtain na Gaeilge
Cén chaoi a bhfuil tú inniu?
How are you today?
Yesterday marked the beginning of Seachtain na Gaeilge, or Irish Language Week. It’s an international celebration of the Irish language and culture. Originally confined to a week, it now stretches into St. Patrick’s Day.
Irish has been challenging to learn. Even the Irish themselves struggle due to the different dialects and no standard pronunciation. It is often viewed as a chore and just another subject you have to take in school, apparently.
It’s so wild to me that language can be so varied on even a relatively small island such as Ireland. I’m sure that’s partially due to the near extinction of the language and attempts to destroy the culture in the past.
Anywho, I’m no historian and have no business diving into this topic as a whole. Here’s to promoting and restoring said culture, a wee bit at a time 😉
